The Faculty of Basic Education at University of Sumer, Dhi Qar Governorate, witnessed the defense of a Master’s thesis submitted by the student Ahmed Risan, entitled: (A Diagnostic and Molecular Study of Some Intestinal Parasites among Patients Attending Hospitals in the Northern Districts of Dhi Qar Governorate). The examination committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Ahmed Khudair Al-Hamairy, with the membership of Asst. Prof. Dr. Imad Kazem Ali and Asst. Prof. Dr. Wissam Hanish, while Asst. Prof. Dr. Muayad Mujbil Obaid participated as a member and supervisor. The study focused on the detection of Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia, which are responsible for diarrheal diseases, through the examination of 410 patients suffering from diarrhea. The results indicated that the prevalence of Entamoeba infection was higher than that of Giardia, with infection rates being more concentrated among males than females. Moreover, the highest prevalence was recorded within the young adult age group (25–45 years) compared to other age groups. Seasonally, the highest infection rates were observed during the summer in comparison with other seasons of the year. The research also included molecular diagnostic investigations using PCR technology on 34 positive samples, targeting two genes of Entamoeba histolytica and one gene of Giardia lamblia. One of the Entamoeba genes demonstrated a high dominance, with 13 positive samples. In addition, phylogenetic tree analysis, gene sequencing, and genetic mutation analysis were conducted. This study aligns with the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and Goal 4 (Quality Education), reflecting the role of scientific research in supporting the healthcare sector and enhancing the quality of education and academic research.
