The eyes can be affected by many diseases that may lead to partial or complete vision loss if they are not diagnosed and treated in time. This article aims to highlight the most important eye diseases, their causes, symptoms, and methods of prevention and treatment. The Anatomical Structure of the Eye (Briefly) The eye consists of several main parts, including: • Cornea • Lens • Retina • Optic nerve • Vitreous body Each part performs a specific function in the process of vision, and any defect in these parts can lead to visual disturbances. Causes of Eye Diseases • Bacterial and viral infections • Genetic factors • Aging • Chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure • Excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation • Poor nutrition and vitamin deficiencies Common Types of Eye Diseases 1. Conjunctivitis Also known as “pink eye,” it is caused by viral or bacterial infections or allergies. Symptoms: • Redness of the eye • Itching • Tearing • Eye discharge Treatment: Antibiotic or anti-allergy eye drops depending on the cause. 2. Cataract A clouding of the eye’s lens that gradually leads to decreased vision. Causes: • Aging • Diabetes • Smoking • Ultraviolet radiation Treatment: Surgery to replace the cloudy lens with an artificial one. ⸻ 3. Glaucoma A condition caused by increased pressure inside the eye, which damages the optic nerve. Symptoms: • Headache • Blurred vision • Eye pain Treatment: Eye drops, oral medications, or surgery. 4. Diabetic Retinopathy Occurs as a result of chronic high blood sugar levels. Symptoms: • Blurred vision • Dark spots in vision • Gradual vision loss Treatment: Laser therapy, injections inside the eye, and proper blood sugar control. 5. Myopia, Hyperopia, and Astigmatism Refractive errors that affect the clarity of vision.
