The Department of biology organised a specialised workshop entitled ‘Safety and Security Strategies in Scientific Laboratories’, presented by the department's coordinator, Mr. Jafar Hamid Jafar, on Tuesday, 10 March 2026, under the auspices of the College Dean and the supervision of the Head of the Department of Life Sciences. The workshop targeted first-year students in the department. This workshop is a proactive and foundational step for first-year students before they fully engage in practical experiments. It aims to: Instil a culture of prevention: Introduce students to the potential hazards within the laboratory environment and how to avoid them. Dealing with emergencies: Explaining rapid response protocols in the event of chemical spills or fires, God forbid. Protecting human and material resources: Ensuring student safety first, followed by the safety of sensitive laboratory equipment and devices. During the workshop, Mr. Jafar Hamid gave a detailed explanation of international warning symbols and how to wear and equip personal protective equipment (PPE). He also focused on ‘laboratory security,’ which ensures the prevention of misuse of biological or chemical materials, emphasising that ‘a safe laboratory is a true environment for creativity.’ .
