Salinity is considered one of the common environmental problems that affect plant growth and productivity, especially in arid or saline agricultural regions. Saline soils contain high concentrations of dissolved salts such as sodium, chlorine, and calcium, which affect the ability of plants to absorb water and nutrients. Understanding the effect of salinity on seed germination and seedling growth is essential for improving agricultural production and managing saline soils. Effect of Salinity on Seed Germination Water absorption inhibition: High salt concentration in soil increases osmotic pressure, making it difficult for seeds to absorb water, which slows down or stops germination. Ionic toxicity: The accumulation of sodium and chloride ions inside the seed may inhibit the enzymes necessary for the germination process. Delayed germination: High salt levels can delay the emergence of the radicle and the embryonic shoot, and in severe cases may completely prevent germination. Effect of Salinity on Seedling Growth Growth reduction: Root and stem elongation decreases due to difficulty in absorbing water and nutrients. Metabolic disturbance: Salts affect enzyme activity and the formation of proteins and chlorophyll, reducing the efficiency of photosynthesis. Toxin accumulation: Some ions may cause toxicity in plants, leading to yellowing and wilting of leaves. Reduced resistance: Seedlings become less tolerant to other environmental stresses such as drought and high temperatures. Strategies to Reduce the Effect of Salinity Selecting salt-tolerant varieties: Some plants can tolerate high levels of salinity. Leaching the soil with fresh water: To reduce salt accumulation. Using balanced fertilizers: To compensate for mineral elements lost due to salinity. Improving soil drainage: To prevent salt accumulation at the soil surface. Conclusion Salinity negatively affects seed germination and seedling growth by limiting water absorption and inhibiting vital processes within the plant. Therefore, managing saline soils and using appropriate agricultural techniques are essential to ensure healthy plant growth and achieve suitable productivity.
