The healthcare sector is witnessing rapid development as a result of significant advancements in digital technologies. Among the most prominent of these technologies is the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT), which has become a key element in building smart medical systems. The concept of IoMT refers to a network of internet-connected medical devices that collect, analyze, and share patients’ health data with healthcare providers in real time. This development has contributed to improving the efficiency of healthcare services and enhancing the ability to monitor medical conditions with greater accuracy and continuity, thereby enabling the delivery of more advanced and effective healthcare.
IoMT systems rely on a variety of smart devices such as blood pressure monitors, heart rate monitoring devices, and blood oxygen measurement devices, in addition to wearable technologies that allow continuous monitoring of patients’ vital signs. These devices transmit health data to internet-connected digital platforms where the information is stored and analyzed using advanced technologies such as big data analytics and artificial intelligence. This integration between medical devices and digital systems enables real-time monitoring of patients’ health conditions, helping to detect abnormal health changes at an early stage and allowing timely medical intervention.
Furthermore, the Internet of Medical Things has contributed to the development of telemedicine by enabling physicians to monitor patients with chronic diseases or those requiring continuous observation without the need for long hospital stays. This is achieved through the automatic transmission of health data from medical devices to digital systems that physicians can access anytime and from anywhere. This approach reduces the need for frequent hospital visits, alleviates pressure on healthcare institutions, and improves patients’ quality of life by providing continuous medical supervision without disrupting their daily activities.
In addition, IoMT plays an important role in improving the management of healthcare institutions by connecting different medical devices within hospitals into one integrated network. This allows healthcare providers to track the performance of medical equipment, monitor its usage, and ensure its availability when needed, thereby enhancing the efficiency of medical resource management. These systems also help improve workflow organization within hospitals and facilitate information exchange between different departments, which contributes to accelerating medical procedures and improving the quality of services provided to patients.
Despite the significant advantages offered by the Internet of Medical Things, its implementation faces several challenges, particularly issues related to information security and the protection of patients’ health data privacy. As the number of internet-connected devices continues to grow, there is an increasing need to develop advanced security systems that ensure the confidentiality of medical data and prevent unauthorized access. Implementing these technologies also requires advanced technological infrastructure and stable communication networks capable of supporting continuous and secure medical data transmission.
In conclusion, the Internet of Medical Things represents one of the most important pillars in building smart medical systems and advancing the digital healthcare ecosystem. By connecting medical devices with digital platforms and continuously analyzing health data, it becomes possible to improve diagnostic accuracy, enhance patient monitoring, and provide more efficient healthcare services. With ongoing technological advancements, the use of IoMT is expected to expand significantly in the future, contributing to the development of a more advanced healthcare system that is better able to respond to patients’ needs.
