Fasting is a religious practice with profound health benefits, extending beyond the spiritual realm to encompass various bodily systems and vital functions. The fields of medicine and nutrition have studied the effects of fasting, arriving at conclusions that confirm its positive role in promoting human health when practiced correctly and in a balanced manner. Fasting gives the digestive system a chance to rest after long periods of continuous activity, helping to improve digestive efficiency, regulate bowel movements, and reduce common problems such as acidity and bloating. It also contributes to the regulation of gastric secretions, which positively impacts overall digestive health. From a metabolic perspective, fasting helps regulate blood sugar levels by improving the body's response to insulin, thus reducing the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes, especially when a healthy diet is maintained during non-fasting hours. Furthermore, fasting contributes to lowering levels of harmful cholesterol in the blood, promoting heart health and reducing the risk of diseases such as atherosclerosis. Among the important benefits of fasting is its role in aiding weight loss. It reduces calorie intake and encourages the body to utilize stored fat as an energy source through metabolism. It also contributes to activating detoxification processes within the body, thus enhancing the efficiency of vital organs. The effects of fasting are not limited to physical aspects; they extend to improving mental health. It helps refine behavior, reduce stress, and promote feelings of tranquility and comfort. This integration of physical and mental well-being makes fasting a balanced system that enhances quality of life. In conclusion, it can be said that fasting is an effective way to maintain physical health if practiced correctly and with due consideration for the individual's health condition. Therefore, patients, especially those with chronic illnesses, are advised to consult their doctor before fasting to ensure they reap the desired benefits without incurring any risks.
