As part of the activities marking World Water Day, and in embodiment of the role of academic institutions in addressing national challenges, the Department of Financial and Banking Sciences at the College of Administrative Sciences, Al-Mustaqbal University, organized a specialized scientific workshop on Thursday, March 28, 2026, entitled: “The Role of Law in Reducing Water Waste in Iraq” The workshop was held under the patronage of the University President, Professor Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi, and under the direct supervision of the Dean of the College of Administrative Sciences, Professor Dr. Haider Ali Al-Dulaimi, with close follow-up from the department leadership, and was attended by faculty members and students of the college. The lecturer, Assistant Lecturer Mohammed Hamza Eidhan, delivered a comprehensive analytical presentation addressing the sovereign importance of water in Iraq. He reviewed the conceptual framework of water waste and its classifications, which included: Domestic waste: resulting from irrational consumption behaviors. Agricultural waste: caused by traditional irrigation methods. Industrial waste: due to the absence of treatment and recycling units. During the workshop, researchers focused on reviewing the most prominent Iraqi legislation in force related to the protection of water resources, emphasizing that the law is both a regulatory and deterrent tool that ensures the efficient use of water. The need to activate legal restrictions and impose penalties on violators was also discussed, to ensure the transition from “random consumption” to “sustainable management.” “Activating water laws is not merely an administrative measure, but a national necessity to protect water security and guarantee the rights of future generations to this vital resource.” The workshop witnessed extensive discussions and valuable contributions from attendees, focusing on how to translate legal texts into practical reality by strengthening field monitoring mechanisms. The event concluded with several key recommendations, most notably: Updating the legislative system in line with the current water scarcity crisis. Strengthening the supervisory role of the competent authorities. Raising public awareness through balanced legal and environmental awareness campaigns.
