The College of Medicine at Al-Mustaqbal University organized an expanded scientific seminar on Sunday, April 13, 2026, titled “Road Traffic Injuries: The Magnitude of the Problem, Health Impacts, and Community Responsibility,” as part of the activities of the Fourth Al-Mustaqbal International Sustainability Week. The event was held under the patronage of the University President, Hassan Shaker Majdi, and with the direct supervision of the Dean of the College, Walaa Luay Al-Falluji. It was attended by Major General Salam Al-Awadi, Director of the Traffic Directorate in Babil Province, and Brigadier General Zaher Al-Hamiri, along with assistant deans, faculty members, students, and interested participants. This initiative aligns with the college’s ongoing efforts to promote public health and serve the community in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.
The seminar comes within the framework of the college’s commitment to addressing one of the most pressing contemporary health issues. Road traffic accidents are among the leading causes of death and disability worldwide and represent a growing burden on Iraq’s healthcare and economic systems, making awareness and prevention a critical academic and societal responsibility.
The seminar aimed to raise awareness within the academic community about the dangers of road traffic accidents and their direct and indirect health consequences, including severe injuries, long-term disabilities, and increasing pressure on healthcare institutions. It also emphasized the importance of community responsibility through adherence to traffic laws, promoting a culture of safe driving, and highlighting the vital role of medical professionals in managing emergency injuries and providing life-saving care.
The seminar featured multiple scientific sessions delivered by Professor Dr. Neama Hassouni, Lecturer Dr. Mazen Abdul Latif, and Lecturer Dr. Issam Abdullah. These sessions included presentations of statistics related to road traffic accidents, analysis of their causes such as excessive speeding and non-compliance with traffic regulations, as well as discussions on the medical aspects of traffic injuries, first aid mechanisms, and the management of critical cases.
The seminar witnessed active engagement from attendees through discussions and interventions that emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts between health, security, and educational institutions in addressing this escalating issue.
In conclusion, the College Deanship reaffirmed its commitment to organizing scientific and awareness activities that strengthen the college’s role in community service, noting that enhancing public awareness of road safety is an integral part of the broader public health system embraced within the college’s educational mission.
