According to the instructions of Prof. Dr. Hasan Shakir Majdi, Dean of Al-Mustaqbal University College to organize workshops on sustainable energy, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Engineering Department convened on Wednesday 12th April, 2021, in the interactive hall a practical workshop on “Water Turbines”. The Lecturer was Assist. Prof. Dr. Abdul Karim Abdul Wahab, with the attendance of the teaching staff of the Department.

The lecturer clarified that the luckiest nowadays are the countries that have water resources because in addition to using water for human consumption, for agriculture, etc., dams can be built on rivers to store water. At the present time, when building dams, there shall be hydroelectricity stations attached to them used for generating electrical energy out of the power of the stored water, and this type of energy is considered as sustainable.

It is remarkable to note that the difference in water height between the head of the dam and its edges is used in operating various types of water turbines. The energy produced by these turbines has two main features: the first, it is clean energy as there is no burning of fuel, and second it is cheap.

There are three types of water turbines. They are:

1. Pelton Wheel Water Turbine
2. Francis Hydro Turbine
3. Propeller Water Turbine
It should be noted that the type of turbine used is determined by the water height and the amount of water discharge. Finally, it is remarkable to note that organizing such workshops is attributed the interest of the College in the SDGs of the UNDP.
