An image gradient is a directional change in the intensity or color in an image. The gradient of the image is one of the fundamental building blocks in image processing. For example, the Canny edge detector uses image gradient for edge detection. In graphics software for digital image editing, the term gradient or color gradient is also used for a gradual blend of color which can be considered as an even gradation from low to high values.
One of the concepts that must be present in any design is the visual gradation, which helps the eye by creating an entrance through which it can see the design, and it also helps in organizing the content and prioritizing it and showing the most important information first.
There are some methods that enable us to create an effective visual gradation
Use of size
Large elements within the design always attract attention, so we can enlarge the size of the element in relation to other elements to give it visual importance. On the other hand, we can reduce some design elements that are not very important to make them less clear.
Use of color and contrast
To create a visual gradation through contrast, we can write using colors such as red and yellow, and then it is difficult for the eye to miss such words. Hot colors such as red, yellow and orange are more eye-catching than cold colors such as blue and green. When hot and cold colors are used together, this increases the contrast of the design, but when the designer focuses on one color while using its different shades, this makes the design visually cohesive and achieves the principle of unity instead of focusing on a specific part.
Creating a visual hierarchy in writing
When the design contains a large amount of text, we can distribute the content on three levels in order to achieve a visual hierarchy. This method applies to any type of design, including magazines, books, websites, etc.
In the first level, we put the most important content, which must be clear when looking at the design.
In the second level, we put the information related to the first level, which must also be clear, but to a lesser extent, to facilitate the movement of the eye as it moves from one level to another.
In the third level, we usually put the rest of the details of the subject, which makes the font size small, but taking into account readability. This level is the largest in terms of the size of the text placed.
Choosing the appropriate classification for writing fonts
When using any of these classifications, we must take into account the independent character of each one. The conscious designer must choose the classification that is consistent with the commercial identity he is working on, or combine one or more classifications if the visual hierarchy requires it.
Using space
White spaces (space) between or around elements are one of the most neglected design principles by some designers due to their lack of awareness of their importance. There is a misconception among some designers that all spaces must be filled in the design, but the opposite is true. Leaving these spaces helps organize information and achieve balance, which leaves the eye room to move without stress. In addition to the designer's understanding of the element of unity in the design, other types achieve unity, including repetition and diversity, to push away boredom by perceiving all visual elements in the design as adjacent parts within a single overall framework. The movement factor is also one of the important foundations of organization that the designer takes into account, whether in the opposition of direction that achieves attraction or according to the movement of the eye within the design. The balance factor should also be taken into account, which gives the design a great degree of beauty and psychological comfort for the viewer through axial balance around a central axis by distributing heavy elements around the center of the design in a circular or semi-circular manner. The designer must also take into account rhythm as one of the important foundations of design that gives a sense of harmony.
