AL-Mustaqbal University’s Role in Enhancing Green Spaces for Sustainable Cities

As part of its efforts to promote environmental sustainability, Future University plays a pivotal role in improving green spaces within the campus and the surrounding community. Through its various initiatives, the university significantly contributes to creating a healthy and aesthetically pleasing urban environment, emphasizing the importance of green spaces in enhancing quality of life.

In alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, the Sustainability Team at Future University—led by Eng. Maryam Mohammed Mousa and Eng. Sally Seilan Hussein from the Department of Building and Construction Technologies Engineering—along with a team of university students, conducted a field visit to Street 40 in Babil Governorate. The purpose of the visit was to investigate the reasons behind the transformation of green spaces in road medians into paved areas ("Maqrnas").

Green spaces in road medians are an essential part of urban infrastructure, as they help improve air quality, reduce pollution, and provide comfortable environments for pedestrians, in addition to enhancing the visual appeal of urban landscapes. However, these spaces are often neglected or converted into unused or paved areas, diminishing their environmental and aesthetic value.
