Under the supervision of the Head of the Department of Building and Construction Technology Engineering, the department’s rapporteur, Dr. Bariq Ali, and the teaching staff, M.M. Alaa Hussein, and M.M. Banin Muhammad, organized an awareness campaign about the water crisis in Iraq, its causes, challenges, and solutions..
Iraq is facing a severe water crisis that threatens its water security, economy, and overall stability. This issue requires urgent and sustainable solutions.

Causes of the Water Crisis in Iraq
- Declining River Flow – Iraq relies on the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, but dam construction in upstream countries (Turkey and Iran) has significantly reduced water inflows.
- Climate Change – Rising temperatures and increasing droughts have decreased surface and groundwater resources.
- Waste and Mismanagement – Lack of effective water management strategies, inefficient irrigation methods, and excessive water waste.
- Pollution – Industrial waste and untreated sewage discharge into rivers have led to freshwater contamination.
- Population Growth – A rising population increases the demand for water resources.

Challenges Facing Iraq
- Water Shortages – Lower river levels threaten drinking water, agriculture, and industry.
- Food Security – Reduced water resources negatively impact agricultural production, increasing reliance on food imports.
- Internal Migration – Water scarcity forces rural populations to migrate to cities, worsening economic and social issues.
- Regional Tensions – Disputes with neighboring countries over water shares could escalate diplomatic conflicts.

Possible Solutions
- International Agreements – Negotiating with upstream countries to secure a fair share of water.
- Modernizing Irrigation Systems – Implementing efficient irrigation techniques like drip irrigation to reduce water waste.
- Water Recycling – Investing in desalination plants and wastewater treatment for irrigation use.
- Raising Awareness – Educating people on water conservation in homes, agriculture, and industries.
- Improving Infrastructure – Reducing water leakage in distribution networks and investing in reservoirs and dams.
- Encouraging Renewable Energy – Using solar-powered desalination to create new water sources.

—- Conclusion: Iraq’s water crisis is not just an environmental issue but a national security concern. Immediate action and sustainable solutions are essential to ensure a secure water future for coming generations.
