Under the patronage of Professor Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi, the esteemed President of Al-Mustaqbal University.
The Psychological Counseling Committee in the Department of Intelligent Medical Systems, in collaboration with the Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance Division at the university, organized an awareness campaign on combating intellectual extremism leading to violence on March 3, 2025. The campaign was supervised by the Head of the Educational Guidance Committee in the Department of Intelligent Medical Systems, Lecturer Dr. Maytham Nabil Muqdad, along with Ms. Huda Khudair Hani, a member of the Educational Guidance Committee, Assistant Lecturer Ali Salim Halim, Head of the Activities Committee, Assistant Lecturer Qusay Munir Diab, Head of the Quality Unit, and Teaching Assistant Ahib Hashim Karim.

The discussion topics focused on the importance of combating intellectual extremism leading to violence, beginning with raising awareness about its concept and causes. Ignorance of extremist ideologies is one of the primary factors contributing to their spread. Intellectual extremism is not confined to any specific religion or culture but can emerge in various ideologies. It is essential to highlight how extremism can lead to violence and disrupt social cohesion. Raising awareness through videos and articles that simplify these concepts helps ensure a broad understanding across all segments of society.

Promoting a culture of dialogue among different social groups is also a fundamental step in combating intellectual extremism. Encouraging individuals to communicate and exchange ideas peacefully can reduce divisions that serve as a breeding ground for extremist ideologies. Organizing workshops and discussion panels can have a positive impact by providing people with opportunities to understand and appreciate diversity more deeply.

The campaign to combat intellectual extremism leading to violence directly contributes to achieving several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by fostering safer communities, promoting justice, and ensuring equal opportunities for all. Among the goals achieved by this initiative:

Firstly, Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, where the campaign helps spread a culture of dialogue and tolerance, reducing conflicts and violence within societies. By raising awareness about the dangers of intellectual extremism and working on sustainable solutions to counter it, the campaign strengthens social stability and builds strong institutions that support security and peace.

Secondly, Goal 4: Quality Education, as one of the most effective ways to combat extremism is to enhance education that emphasizes critical thinking and promotes values of tolerance and openness. Integrating topics on coexistence and acceptance of others into educational curricula helps shape a more aware and adaptable generation, reducing the likelihood of individuals being drawn into extremist ideologies.

Thirdly, Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities, since intellectual extremism often thrives on feelings of marginalization and discrimination. By fostering a culture of mutual respect and providing equal opportunities for all, regardless of their backgrounds, the campaign helps bridge social and economic gaps that could lead to extremism. Supporting marginalized groups and integrating them into society contributes to a more balanced and just environment.
Thus, combating intellectual extremism not only enhances community security but also supports sustainability by fostering educated, tolerant, and more just societies.

Al-Mustaqbal University is the first one university in Iraq.
