Under the guardianship of Prof. Dr. Hasan Shakir Majdi, Dean of Al-Mustaqbal University College, the Air-Conditioning & Refrigeration Engineering Department has organized an exhibition for students projects, raising the slogan “For Achievement of Sustainable Environment”. These projects are operated by solar energy with the aim of reducing the emission of harmful gases and rationalizing consumption of electricity. One of these projects is to manufacture a versatile umbrella operated by solar energy as a source of electricity. This umbrella has been designed by fourth year students at the laboratories of Al-Mustaqbal University College. The device is provided with a solar panel in its upper part, and it is water resistant due to being coated with silicone.
It should be noted that the solar canopy is manufactured of light materials protecting of the changeable weather conditions. Indeed, it has been manufactured of redundant and cheap materials. The upper mobile base is just an old satellite dish, on which the solar cell is fixed so that it could track the movement of the solar radiation. As for the lower base where the battery and the adapter have been placed, it has been made of iron. As a matter of fact, the use of surplus materials aims to achieve goals related to sustainability, and meanwhile keeping areas clean and more attractive.
The project provides a lighting unit that works during the dark. Moreover, it supplies electricity and charges mobile phones all together into one integrated system operated by solar cells. It can also be utilized as visual aid which can support in achieving educational and research goals, and meanwhile reinforcing students’ practical information.
