As part of efforts to enhance students' skills in understanding and using vocabulary through scientific and interactive methods, students Abdulwahab Jabir and Mohammed Waseem conducted a workshop titled "Public and Private Vocabulary in English" under the supervision of Lecturer Zainab Kareem, and in the presence of Dr. Salam Hassan Maki Al-Asadi, Head of the English Department, along with several faculty members and students.
The workshop focused on the concept of public (general) and private (specific) vocabulary, highlighting that every word has two aspects:
• The public aspect: A meaning that can be easily understood by everyone.
• The private aspect: A meaning that requires further explanation or in-depth study to be fully grasped.
The students presented practical examples from daily life, illustrating how these types of vocabulary are used in different contexts. This approach helped attendees comprehend the subtle distinctions between surface-level and deeper meanings of words.
Sustainability in Education
This workshop aligns with Al-Mustaqbal University's commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:
• Goal 4 (Quality Education): By providing interactive workshops that help students develop their linguistic and communication skills.
• Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth): Through fostering critical thinking and linguistic analysis skills, which enhance students' career opportunities.
• Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals): By strengthening collaboration between students and faculty members to deliver impactful academic activities.
At the conclusion of the workshop, Dr. Salam Hassan Maki Al-Asadi, Head of the English Department, praised the students' initiative, emphasizing that such activities enhance students' critical thinking skills and deepen their understanding of the English language.
