As part of the academic activities organized by the Department of English at the College of Education – Al-Mustaqbal University, student Montather Laith delivered a compelling workshop titled "The Ethics of Using Artificial Intelligence," under the supervision of Lecturer and Department Coordinator, Ms. Rasha Ihsan Saadon, with active participation from students and faculty members.
The workshop explored the educational and ethical dimensions of Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly its applications in learning the English language. The student presented key points including:
• AI tools that support language acquisition, such as ChatGPT, Duolingo, and EWA, which assist in improving writing, speaking, and pronunciation.
• The risks of over-reliance on AI, especially the potential decline in critical thinking and the reduced mental engagement of students.
• The distinction between surface learning and deep learning, emphasizing the need to balance technological use with human cognitive effort.
• A personal theatrical experience, where the student shared how he utilized AI to enhance his performance, while underscoring that technology should serve as a tool—not a substitute—for human creativity and effort.
The session sparked dynamic discussions among attendees, who addressed the future of AI in education and the importance of responsible and ethical engagement with such technologies.
This workshop aligns closely with Al-Mustaqbal University’s vision to promote the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:
• Goal 4 (Quality Education): by enhancing students’ analytical and creative skills through the integration of advanced technologies.
• Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure): by highlighting the role of AI in elevating the quality of language education.
• Goal 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions): by raising awareness around digital ethics and responsible technology governance.
• Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals): through collaborative dialogue between students and educators on globally relevant academic topics.
At the conclusion of the session, Lecturer Rasha Ihsan praised Montather Laith’s thoughtful presentation and the workshop’s well-balanced approach between technical insight and ethical reflection. She reaffirmed the department’s commitment to supporting innovative student initiatives that advance both academic excellence and intellectual maturity.
Al-Mustaqbal University – The First University in Iraq.
