In an era of accelerating environmental and health challenges, the concept of sustainability has emerged as a pivotal solution for achieving a balance between human needs and environmental resources. Sustainability not only means preserving natural resources, but also includes building healthy environments that ensure long-term human well-being.
Environmental health is one of the cornerstones of sustainability, as it is directly linked to the environmental factors surrounding humans, such as clean air, clean water, and healthy soil. When these elements are exposed to pollution or neglect, the effects are reflected in public health, causing chronic diseases and increasing health problems.
Linking Sustainability and Health:
Sustainable agriculture provides healthy food without harming the soil or using harmful pesticides.
Sustainable transportation, such as walking or cycling, reduces air pollution and improves physical fitness.
Green cities and open spaces support mental health and reduce stress.
Sustainable waste management reduces the spread of disease and protects water resources.
Hence, health and environmental sustainability becomes a collective responsibility that requires individual awareness, the role of governments, and the cooperation of educational institutions and the private sector. When this system is achieved, we build healthier communities, more resilient economies, and a safer environment
Prepared by: Shahad Nawras Abbas
Al _ Mustaqbal University, the first university in Iraq
