Introduction
Sweets are a favorite food for many, adding a touch of pleasure and psychological comfort, whether after a meal or during times of relaxation. However, behind this delicious taste lurks health effects that may be harmful when consumed in excess. Is the momentary pleasure worth these consequences?
1. The Effect of Sweets on Blood Sugar
Most sweets contain a high percentage of simple sugars, such as sucrose or glucose, which leads to a rapid rise in blood sugar levels. This rise is followed by a sudden drop, causing fatigue, stress, and cravings for more sugar, setting the body into a vicious cycle.
2. Weight Gain and Obesity
Sweets are rich in calories but poor in beneficial nutrients. Eating them in excess leads to a calorie surplus, which is stored as fat, especially in the abdominal area. Obesity is a major risk factor for heart disease and diabetes.
3. Tooth Decay
Sugars are an ideal food source for bacteria in the mouth. When sugar is broken down, acids are released that attack tooth enamel and lead to cavities. Not brushing your teeth after eating sweets increases this risk, especially in children.
4. Impact on Mood and Energy
Although sugar gives an immediate feeling of energy, this feeling is temporary. After the sugar high, a sharp drop occurs that may cause lethargy and stress. Some studies link excessive sugar intake to increased symptoms of depression and anxiety, especially in those with an unbalanced lifestyle.
5. Chronic Health Problems
Excessive consumption of sweets is linked to an increased risk of chronic diseases such as:
Type 2 diabetes
Cardiovascular disease
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
High cholesterol and triglycerides
Tips to Reduce Sweet Intake
Don't eat them on an empty stomach.
Replace them with fruits or healthy desserts.
Drink water or herbal tea when you have a sweet craving.
Don't keep sweets on hand.
Balance your diet with protein and fiber to reduce sugar cravings.
Conclusion
Sweets are not the enemy, but they require awareness and moderation. A little may be acceptable, especially on special occasions, but excessive daily consumption can have a negative impact on your physical and mental health. Remember, your health deserves smart choices.

Al _ Mustaqbal University, the first university in Iraq
Prepared by: Shahad Nawras Abbas
