The outbreak of recent epidemics, such as COVID-19, has highlighted the importance of relying on advanced technologies to address global health crises. Artificial intelligence (AI) plays an increasing role in monitoring infectious diseases and predicting their spread by analyzing vast amounts of data, behavioral patterns, and environmental conditions.

AI models depend on diverse data sources, including social media networks, health records, location tracking systems, and climate reports, to assess the likelihood of a disease outbreak in a specific area. These technologies also enable real-time monitoring of cases and efficient allocation of medical resources.

During the COVID-19 crisis, AI contributed to estimating future infection numbers, designing quarantine strategies, and understanding the virus’s behavior in different environments. It also helped accelerate vaccine development by rapidly analyzing viral proteins beyond traditional methods.

AI’s role is not limited to managing current epidemics but extends to forecasting future outbreaks by building early warning systems that alert health authorities before crises occur.

However, these systems face challenges related to data accuracy, privacy protection, and usage oversight. To ensure their success, international cooperation, continuous updating of data and algorithms, and clear policies governing AI use in healthcare are required.

AL Mustaqbal University the first university in Iraq.
