Recently, scientific interest has grown in its potential to support kidney health, particularly due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Benefits of Sage for Kidney Health
1. Antioxidant Properties and Kidney Protection
Oxidative stress is one of the main causes of kidney function deterioration, especially in conditions like chronic kidney failure or diabetes. Sage has shown the ability to reduce free radicals, which helps protect kidney cells from damage.
2. Anti-inflammatory Effects
Inflammation plays a major role in chronic kidney disease. Sage contains compounds that help reduce both localized and systemic inflammation, thereby supporting long-term kidney health.
3. Support in Cases of High Blood Sugar
High blood sugar levels can harm the kidneys over time. Sage has demonstrated the ability to lower glucose levels and improve insulin sensitivity, offering protection against diabetic nephropathy.
4. Protection Against Drug-Induced Kidney Damage
Some animal studies suggest that sage may help protect the kidneys from toxicity caused by certain medications such as gentamicin, due to its strong antioxidant activity.

Precautions and Warnings
• Sage contains thujone, a compound that can be toxic in high doses; therefore, it is not recommended to consume more than 2–3 cups of sage tea per day.
• It should not be used by pregnant or breastfeeding women, or individuals with epilepsy, without medical supervision.
• Sage should not be used as a replacement for prescribed medications to treat kidney disease, but only as a supportive supplement under professional guidance.

Conclusion
Sage is a promising herb for supporting kidney health due to its natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, as well as its role in blood sugar regulation and waste elimination. While early research results are encouraging, its use must be safe, measured, and supervised by healthcare professionals, especially in cases of chronic kidney disease.

Al-Mustaqbal University ، The First University in Iraq
