Floating Power Stations: The Future for Coastal Cities
By: Eng. Abdullah Marza Hamza

Sustainable Development Goals:
Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
Goal 13: Climate Action

Floating power stations—also known as power ships or floating energy platforms—are innovative energy solutions designed to generate electricity directly from the sea or while stationed near coastal regions. These mobile or semi-permanent structures are equipped with power generation technologies ranging from gas turbines to renewable sources like solar panels and wave energy converters.

For densely populated coastal cities or island nations where land is limited and energy demand is high, floating power stations provide a flexible and fast-deployable alternative to traditional land-based infrastructure. They can be anchored offshore to reduce environmental and urban impact, while delivering clean and consistent electricity to onshore grids.

Some designs rely on liquefied natural gas (LNG) or hydrogen as fuels, offering lower emissions than coal or diesel alternatives. Others integrate floating solar panels or offshore wind turbines, expanding the scope of renewable energy without occupying valuable land space.

Floating platforms are also resilient in the face of rising sea levels and can be relocated in response to changing climate or disaster conditions. Their mobility allows them to serve temporary energy needs, such as during construction projects, humanitarian missions, or emergencies.

The development of floating power infrastructure contributes to sustainable urban growth, energy access, and climate resilience. As technology and marine engineering continue to evolve, floating power stations may become essential components of the future energy landscape.

Al-Mustaqbal University – The No. 1 Private University in Iraq
