In recent years, vision correction surgeries have witnessed significant technological advancements. One of the most revolutionary developments is the use of the Femtosecond Laser, known for its extremely high precision and ultra-fast pulse duration — measured in femtoseconds (10⁻¹⁵ seconds). This technology has transformed refractive surgeries, especially in two leading procedures: LASIK and SMILE.

⸻

🔍 What is the Femtosecond Laser?

The femtosecond laser is a specialized type of laser that creates highly precise incisions in the cornea without causing damage to surrounding tissues. This high accuracy minimizes complications and accelerates healing, making it the top choice in modern ophthalmic procedures.

⸻

👁 1. LASIK – The Most Commonly Used Procedure

LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. In this procedure, the femtosecond laser is used to create a thin flap in the outer layer of the cornea. This flap is lifted, and an Excimer laser is then used to reshape the inner corneal tissue to correct the refractive error. The flap is then repositioned without the need for stitches.

🔹 Advantages of LASIK:
• Fast visual recovery (often within 1–2 days).
• High precision and predictability.
• Widely available and clinically proven.

⸻

👁 2. SMILE – The Newer, Minimally Invasive Technique

SMILE, or Small Incision Lenticule Extraction, is a more recent advancement that requires no corneal flap. The femtosecond laser alone is used to carve a small lens-shaped piece (called a lenticule) within the cornea. A tiny incision (2–4 mm) is made to extract the lenticule, changing the corneal curvature and correcting the refractive error.

🔹 Advantages of SMILE:
• No flap = lower risk of displacement or dry eye.
• Less postoperative discomfort.
• Ideal for contact sports or patients with thinner corneas.

💡 Conclusion

Both LASIK and SMILE are excellent vision correction options, each with its own set of benefits. The best choice depends on the patient’s eye condition, lifestyle, and the surgeon’s recommendation.

Thanks to the continuous advancement in femtosecond laser technology, vision correction has become safer, more accurate, and more comfortable than ever before — bringing the dream of clear vision without glasses within reach. 👓

"AL_mustaqbal University is the first university in Iraq"

al-mustaqbal University Website
