Introduction:
Makeup is an essential part of the skincare and beauty routine for many women, and even some men, in our modern age. Despite its aesthetic benefits, many cosmetics contain chemical elements that may have negative short- or long-term effects on the skin and overall health. In this article, we will learn about the most important of these elements and their potential effects.
1. Lead:
• Uses: Found in small quantities in some lipsticks and eyeliners.
• Negative effects: Chronic exposure to lead can lead to neurological problems, hormonal imbalances, and kidney and brain damage, especially when absorbed in large quantities through the skin or mouth.
2. Parabens:
• Uses: Used as a preservative to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi in cosmetics.
• Negative effects: Parabens are suspected of affecting female hormonal balance because they resemble estrogen, and may be linked to an increased risk of breast cancer with frequent and prolonged use.

3. Formaldehyde Formaldehyde:
• Uses: Added to some nail polishes and hair products as a preservative.
• Adverse effects: Classified as a carcinogen, it can cause skin, eye, and respiratory irritation, especially with repeated exposure or prolonged inhalation.
4. Phthalates:
• Uses: Used to enhance the texture and scent of products and are found in perfumes and hairsprays.
• Adverse effects: Associated with hormonal disturbances and may affect fertility, especially with chronic exposure.
5. Synthetic Fragrances:
• Uses: Added to give the product an attractive scent.
• Adverse effects: Often contain ingredients not listed on the label and may cause allergies, skin irritation, or headaches. Some can accumulate in the body over the long term.
6. Titanium Dioxide & Zinc Oxide:
• Uses: Used in foundations and sunscreens.
• Adverse effects: Generally safe, but when in the form of nanoparticles Nano-particles may penetrate the skin and cause inflammatory reactions or cellular damage, raising controversy about their complete safety.
Conclusion:
Although many companies have begun to produce natural cosmetics free of harmful substances, consumer awareness remains the first line of defense. It is important to read product ingredients, choose products with quality certifications, minimize excessive makeup use, and give the skin a chance to breathe.
Recommendations:
• Choose products that are "paraben- and phthalate-free."
• Conduct a sensitivity test before using a new product.
• Cleanse the skin thoroughly after removing makeup.
• Use organic makeup whenever possible.

Al _ Mustaqbal University, the first university in Iraq
Prepared by: Shahad Nawras Abbas
