Forensic entomology is a branch of forensic science that focuses on the study of insects and their relationship to crime scenes, especially dead bodies. The main idea is that insects appear on a body in a predictable order, which helps investigators estimate the time of death and other circumstances.

For example, blowflies usually lay their eggs on a body within a few hours after death. These eggs hatch into larvae that grow through well-known stages. By identifying the insect species and its stage of development, experts can calculate how long the body has been dead.

This science is not only used to estimate the time of death but also to determine if a body was moved from one place to another, or to detect the presence of poisons, since toxins can affect insect growth.

Simply put, insects act as “silent witnesses” in criminal cases, revealing details that the human eye alone cannot detect.

Al-Mustaqbal University – the first university in Iraq.

SDGS
