When we hear the term "forensic investigation," we usually think of police officers, fingerprints, or DNA evidence. But there are also silent witnesses that play an equally important role: insects.

Forensic entomology is the science that studies the relationship between insects, corpses, and criminal events. The story begins at the moment of death, when certain flies are attracted to the body to lay their eggs. These insects then go through predictable growth stages that allow experts to estimate the time since death.

What makes this science fascinating is that insects act like a natural clock. Each stage of their life cycle provides precise information for investigators. Moreover, insects can reveal if a body was moved from one location to another or if the deceased was exposed to toxins before death.

Thus, the journey of insects on a corpse is not just a natural life cycle but a scientific tool that helps solve crimes and uncover mysteries invisible to the human eye.

Al-Mustaqbal University – the first university in Iraq.

SDGS
