“The Department of Medical Laboratory Techniques Holds a Workshop on ‘Laboratory Waste and Its Sustainable Management’ as Part of the Preparations for the Sustainability Camp”

The Department of Medical Laboratory Techniques held a scientific workshop on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, titled:<br />“Laboratory Waste and Its Sustainable Management”, presented by Dr. Rasha Hussein Odeh, at 7:00 PM via the Google Meet online platform. This workshop was part of the preparatory series for the Sustainability Camp scheduled to take place at the beginning of October 2025.<br /><br />The workshop highlighted the concept of laboratory waste in its various forms (chemical, biological, and radioactive) and the challenges associated with its management, emphasizing the dangers of improper handling and its impact on human health and environmental safety. The lecture also addressed sustainable laboratory waste management practices, including reducing usage, recycling, safe treatment, and environmentally proper disposal.<br /><br />Dr. Rasha emphasized the importance of adopting practical policies in medical laboratories to ensure the responsible use of chemicals and equipment, and the development of staff skills in biosafety and biosecurity. She also stressed the need to raise awareness among students and teaching staff about sustainable waste management plans, in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being and Goal 13: Climate Action.<br /><br />The workshop witnessed active participation and engagement from department students and faculty members, with numerous questions and contributions enriching the discussion and providing practical insights into the topic.<br /><br />The Department of Medical Laboratory Techniques confirmed that organizing this workshop is part of its serious preparations for the Sustainability Camp, reflecting the department’s commitment to enhancing environmental awareness and social responsibility among students, thereby preparing a scientifically trained generation capable of facing environmental and professional challenges in innovative and sustainable ways.<br /><br />Al-Mustaqbal University – The First University in Iraq<br />Department of Medical Laboratory Techniques – Ranked First in the Iraqi National Classification
