The PET Scan (Positron Emission Tomography) is an advanced medical imaging technique used for accurate diagnosis and treatment of cancer. It shows how cells in the body are functioning rather than just their structure, allowing doctors to identify cancerous cells and determine how far the disease has spread.
The procedure begins by injecting the patient with a safe radioactive substance called Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG), which is similar to sugar. Cancer cells absorb more of this substance because they use more energy, making them clearly visible on the scan.
The PET scanner then takes detailed images of the body, helping doctors locate tumors precisely.
PET Scan helps doctors to:
Detect cancer at early stages.
Determine the spread of the disease.
Monitor treatment effectiveness.
Distinguish between healthy and cancerous tissues.
Treatment is planned based on the scan results, enabling doctors to choose the most effective method such as surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy with greater accuracy.
