Universal Children’s Day falls on the twentieth of November each year, according to a recommendation by the United Nations. This day was first established in November 1949 by the International Democratic Women’s Union during the Paris Conference.
Historical Background
In 1954, the United Nations General Assembly recommended that a World Children’s Day be observed in all countries as a day to promote global understanding and brotherhood among children. At that time, the fifth of November was designated as Universal Children’s Day. This announcement was preceded by several international agreements concerning children’s rights.
On November 20, 1989, the Convention on the Rights of the Child was signed, based on the Declaration of the Rights of the Child issued on the same date in 1959.
Most countries around the world celebrate Universal Children’s Day on November 20 every year, reaffirming the commitment to children’s rights as defined by the United Nations.
The Convention on the Rights of the Child outlines the political, civil, health, cultural, and economic rights of children. It also mandates monitoring and oversight of the implementation of these articles by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, whose members represent countries from around the world.
On the 61st, 51st, and 21st anniversaries of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and the Geneva Convention, the International Committee of the Red Cross published, in 2010, a series of booklets and publications addressing children’s conditions around the world.
These publications discuss the risks faced by children affected by environmental issues and other challenges, and highlight the efforts needed to meet their needs, introduce protective legislation, and provide them with necessary care.
On this occasion, the official domain website launched a dedicated electronic portal for children, offering a wealth of resources and information about children’s rights and facilitating access to these materials.
