with the patronage of the President of Al-Mustaqbal University, Prof. Dr. Hasan Shakir Majdi, and With the direct supervision of the Dean of the College of Science, Asst. Prof. Dr. Forat Hamza Al-Sultani, and in accordance with the directives of the University Presidency to enhance community awareness and organize educational seminars and workshops related to the dangers of addiction and drug abuse, the Department of biology held a scientific workshop titled: “The Chemistry Behind Drugs and Their Effects on the Brain” The workshop was presented by Asst. Lecturer Dohaa Salah Sahib from the Department of Life Sciences, with the participation of a group of students and faculty members. The workshop discussed the chemical structure of narcotic substances and their mechanism of effect on the central nervous system, in addition to explaining the behavioral and cognitive consequences of drug use. It also highlighted the most widespread types of drugs and ways to avoid their harmful effects. Furthermore, the workshop shed light on the health and social damages resulting from drug abuse, emphasizing the need to strengthen awareness within the university community and encourage students to contribute to promoting a culture of prevention. The workshop concluded with a discussion session between the lecturer and participants to answer questions, stressing the importance of adopting continuous awareness programs that contribute to protecting young people from this dangerous phenomenon. This activity comes as part of a series of scientific events organized by the Department of Life Sciences in support of the university’s vision to enhance health awareness and positive behavior among students. Al-Mustaqbal University is the first university in Iraq.
