Introduction
Electrical transformers are among the most important devices in electrical power systems, as they play a fundamental role in transmitting and distributing energy from power plants to consumers with high efficiency. Without transformers, it would be difficult to transmit electricity over long distances or operate various devices that require different voltage levels.
Concept of the Electrical Transformer
A transformer is a static electrical device (it has no moving parts). Its function is to transfer electrical energy from one circuit to another through electromagnetic induction, with the ability to raise or lower the voltage as needed, without changing the frequency.
Working Principle of the Transformer
The operation of a transformer is based on Faraday’s Law of Electromagnetic Induction. When an alternating current flows through the primary winding, it generates a varying magnetic flux in the iron core, which in turn induces an electrical voltage in the secondary winding.
If the number of turns in the secondary winding is greater than in the primary → the transformer is a step-up transformer.
If the number of turns in the secondary winding is fewer than in the primary → the transformer is a step-down transformer.
Main Components of a Transformer
Iron Core: Made of thin steel laminations to reduce losses.
Primary Winding: Receives electrical power from the source.
Secondary Winding: Delivers power to the load.
Insulating Oil (in large transformers): Used for cooling and electrical insulation.
Tank and Insulators: Protect internal parts and prevent leakage.
