Microscopic Fungi and Their Impact on Human Health Microscopic fungi are tiny living organisms found in air, soil, and water, with some living harmlessly on the human body. However, certain types can cause health problems when present in large amounts or when they enter the body in unusual ways. Importance of Fungi in the Environment and Human Health Microscopic fungi play a crucial role in decomposing organic matter and recycling nutrients in nature. They are also used in the production of medicines, such as antibiotics and antifungal drugs. Fungi and Diseases Some fungi can cause diseases in humans, particularly in individuals with weakened immune systems, including: Skin infections: such as fungi affecting the feet or scalp. Respiratory infections: for example, Aspergillus fungi can cause lung problems. Systemic infections: in rare cases, fungi can enter the bloodstream and cause serious health issues. Prevention and Protection Maintain personal and environmental hygiene. Properly ventilate homes to reduce moisture that promotes fungal growth. Avoid handling moldy or decayed materials without protection. Consult a doctor if unusual skin or respiratory symptoms appear. Conclusion While microscopic fungi play a beneficial role in the environment and industry, some types can negatively affect human health, especially in immunocompromised individuals. Understanding these organisms and following preventive measures is therefore essential. Al-Mustaqbal University is the first university in Iraq.
