The Department of Prosthetics and Orthotics Engineering organized an awareness seminar titled “The Risks of Smoking and Its Health and Social Impacts”, as part of its efforts to promote health awareness and strengthen the culture of prevention among students. The seminar was presented by Assistant Lecturer Maryam Ghassan Ghafar, who reviewed the harmful effects of smoking on the respiratory system, heart, and blood vessels, in addition to its role in increasing the risk of cancer and chronic diseases. The seminar also addressed the dangers of secondhand smoke and its serious effects on women, children, and vulnerable groups. The lecturer highlighted the importance of adopting effective strategies for smoking cessation, presenting the most recent therapeutic and behavioral methods that help individuals overcome this harmful habit. Updated statistics were also presented to demonstrate the prevalence of smoking and its negative impact on public health and the economy. At the end of the seminar, the floor was opened for discussion, during which students’ questions and inquiries were addressed. The attendees expressed their great benefit from the information presented and emphasized the importance of continuing such activities to enhance health awareness and create a university environment free of risky behaviors.
