As part of enhancing environmental awareness and reinforcing sustainability concepts, an awareness workshop entitled “Water Scarcity: Causes and Treatment Methods” was held. The workshop was delivered by Asst. Lecturer Alaa Hussein Abdul-Ameer and Asst. Lecturer Banin Mohammed Hilal, aiming to shed light on one of the most serious environmental challenges facing the world in general and Iraq in particular. The workshop addressed the concept of water scarcity and its main causes, most notably climate change, low rainfall, poor management of water resources, and excessive consumption, in addition to rapid population growth and unplanned urban expansion. It also discussed the negative impacts of water scarcity on agriculture, public health, the environment, and sustainable development. Furthermore, the workshop discussed the most important treatment methods and proposed solutions, including rationalizing water consumption, adopting modern irrigation techniques, reusing greywater, and raising community awareness about the importance of conserving water resources, as well as the role of educational institutions in instilling positive behaviors among students and the community. The workshop concluded by emphasizing the importance of joint efforts among individuals and institutions to reduce water scarcity and achieve sustainable management of water resources, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation.
