The sinuses are air-filled spaces located within the bones around the nose and eyes. When they are healthy, they are filled with air and mucus drains easily. However, when the sinuses become blocked, mucus can build up and lead to infection and discomfort. Types of Sinusitis Sinusitis can be classified based on how long the symptoms last: • Acute sinusitis: Lasts up to 10 days and is usually caused by a viral infection such as the common cold. • Subacute sinusitis: Symptoms last between 4 and 12 weeks. • Chronic sinusitis: Symptoms persist for more than 12 weeks and may be difficult to treat. • Recurrent sinusitis: Several episodes occur within one year. Causes Sinusitis can be caused by several factors, including: • Viral infections (most common cause) • Bacterial infections • Allergies • Nasal polyps • Deviated nasal septum • Exposure to pollutants or cigarette smoke Symptoms Common symptoms of sinusitis include: • Facial pain or pressure • Nasal congestion or blockage • Thick nasal discharge • Headache • Reduced sense of smell • Cough • Fever (more common in acute cases) Diagnosis Doctors usually diagnose sinusitis based on symptoms and a physical examination. In some cases, imaging tests such as CT scans or nasal endoscopy may be used to confirm the diagnosis, especially in chronic or severe cases. Treatment Treatment depends on the type and severity of sinusitis: • Rest and drinking plenty of fluids • Saline nasal sprays or rinses • Pain relievers • Decongestants (for short-term use) • Antibiotics (only if a bacterial infection is confirmed) • In severe or chronic cases, surgery may be considered Prevention Sinusitis can sometimes be prevented by: • Treating allergies properly • Avoiding cigarette smoke and air pollution • Practicing good hand hygiene • Staying hydrated Conclusion Sinusitis is a common condition that can significantly affect quality of life. With proper diagnosis and treatment, most people recover fully. Early care and preventive measures can help reduce the risk of recurring sinus infections. By: Dr. Fadhil Sahib .
