The Department of biology organized a scientific workshop entitled “The Importance of Afforestation in Confronting Climate Change”, delivered by Asst. Lecturer Zainab Nadhim Aziz, with the participation of the department’s students.
The workshop addressed the vital role of afforestation in mitigating the impacts of climate change, particularly through its contribution to the absorption of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide, improving air quality, regulating temperatures, and maintaining environmental balance, in addition to combating desertification.
The workshop also highlighted the importance of vegetation cover in protecting soil from erosion, enhancing biodiversity, and supporting environmental sustainability. Emphasis was placed on the need to raise awareness of the importance of afforestation and to adopt environmental initiatives as a shared responsibility between educational institutions and society.
This workshop comes within a series of scientific and awareness-raising activities organized by the Department of Life Sciences, aiming to enhance environmental awareness among students, promote sustainability concepts, and link scientific knowledge with practical applications, in a manner that serves the environment and the community.
This workshop contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 13 (Climate Action) by promoting the role of afforestation in mitigating the impacts of climate change.
It also supports Goal 15 (Life on Land) through preserving vegetation cover, enhancing biodiversity, and promoting the sustainability of ecosystems.
