Department of Biology Holds a Scientific Workshop on Stray Dogs and Echinococcus granulosus (Hydatid Cysts)

with the patronage of the President of Al-Mustaqbal University, Professor Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi, and the direct supervision of the Dean of the College of Science, Assistant Professor Dr. Furat Hamza Al-Sultani, the Department of Biology at the College of Science held a scientific workshop entitled “Stray Dogs and Echinococcus granulosus (Hydatid Cysts)” on Tuesday, 23/12/2025. The workshop was delivered by Professor Dr. Maher Ali Jattan, who addressed the scientific and health-related aspects associated with the spread of stray dogs and their role in transmitting Echinococcus granulosus, the causative agent of hydatid disease. The lecture highlighted modes of transmission, clinical symptoms, methods of diagnosis and prevention, as well as the importance of community awareness in limiting the spread of this disease. The workshop witnessed notable attendance and active interaction from faculty members and students, who praised the importance of the topic and its role in raising health and environmental awareness, particularly given its significant impact on public health. This workshop comes as part of a series of scientific activities organized by the Department of Biology, aimed at enhancing academic knowledge, linking theoretical concepts with practical applications, contributing to community service, and addressing important health and environmental issues. Al-Mustaqbal University is the first university in Iraq.
