In an official visit reflecting the depth of cooperation between academic and governmental institutions in addressing environmental challenges, Minister of Environment Dr. Hilo Al-Askari visited Al-Mustaqbal University today and reviewed several pioneering initiatives launched by the university in the fields of environmental protection, combating desertification, climate adaptation, and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The visit included a tour of the Al-Mustaqbal Center for Renewable Energy Research, where the minister was introduced to modern equipment and technologies provided by the university to support research in clean and sustainable energy. He also visited the Artificial Intelligence Research Center, where he observed projects utilizing AI in addressing environmental issues, and toured the university's natural reserve, established to preserve biodiversity—a groundbreaking initiative among Iraqi universities.
In a media statement, His Excellency expressed his deep admiration for the genuine efforts and practical applications he witnessed at the university, stating:
"What we saw today at Al-Mustaqbal University is a living example of the vital role that universities can play in protecting the environment and achieving sustainable development. The initiatives we reviewed reflect a forward-looking vision and high institutional responsibility. At the Ministry of Environment, we consider this university a strategic partner in implementing national environmental policies."
He added:
"Al-Mustaqbal University is a national model to be proud of. It is a source of honor for all Iraqis. We call upon other universities to follow its example and embrace environmental and climate issues from a scientific and practical perspective."
The minister and his delegation—which included the Deputy Minister for Administrative Affairs, several general directors, and officials from the Ministry and Babil Environment Directorate—were received by Prof. Dr. Muzafar Sadiq Al-Zuhairy, Director of Scientific and Academic Supervision, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Abbas Al-Bawi, Scientific Assistant, representing the University President Prof. Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi, along with a number of deans, department heads, and faculty members.
In his welcoming speech, Dr. Al-Zuhairy emphasized that this visit represents significant support for the university’s academic and research efforts. He pointed out that Al-Mustaqbal University believes education is inseparable from societal and environmental concerns, making them a strategic priority.
He added:
"Thanks to this vision, we achieved first place among Iraqi universities in the THE Impact Ranking 2025, and the university ranked globally in SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy, which reflects our strong commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals."
He also stressed the importance of strengthening the partnership with the Ministry of Environment through joint programs and projects focused on environmental awareness, research training, and support for national policies addressing climate change and desertification.
