Abstract / Purpose of the Smart Shield
The primary objective of the Smart Sports Shield is to enhance the safety of athletes in various competitive sports by minimizing the risk of external injuries and impacts. The system is specifically designed to protect motorcycle riders by reducing the likelihood of trauma or wounds during accidents.
Concept Overview
The system involves the design and fabrication of a smart embedded unit that can be installed either inside or outside the protective sports shield, depending on its configuration. This wearable technology is tailored for safety enhancement during sports activities.
System Components
The smart shield system consists of:
• MPU-6050 gyroscope and accelerometer sensor: for motion and directional tracking.
• Vibration/Impact sensor: to detect physical shocks or crashes.
• Proximity sensors: capable of detecting nearby obstacles or individuals at distances of 1 meter and 2 meters.
• Arduino Nano microcontroller: acts as the electronic brain of the system.
• Voltage regulator: ensures stable power supply.
• Rechargeable 9V battery: compact, lightweight, and long-lasting.
• Power switch: for manual activation and deactivation.
All components are enclosed within a plastic housing weighing approximately 200 grams, making the system lightweight. It can be mounted internally or externally on the helmet without altering its aesthetic design.


Functionality
Upon wearing the protective shield, the system is activated, and the first alert message is immediately sent to designated emergency contacts—such as a paramedic or a family member. In case of:
• A fall or accident
• Close proximity to another athlete
• Presence of side barriers or tunnel-like structures within 1–2 meters
The sensors generate vibrational alerts to warn the wearer of potential danger.
Additionally, the system is equipped with a GPS module to accurately identify the accident location. It automatically sends SMS notifications containing geographic coordinates to:
• Emergency medical services
• Attending physicians
• The victim’s family
If no response is received within 10 seconds, the system initiates an automatic emergency call to both the ambulance service and the family members, ensuring rapid rescue and first aid intervention.

Economic Feasibility
Saving a life is invaluable. The device is economically viable due to the local availability of all required components, allowing for easy and cost-effective production.
Patent and Recognition
The system has been officially granted a Patent and Industrial Design Certificate from the Central Organization for Standardization and Quality Control (COSQC) in Iraq, recognizing the innovation in the design and fabrication of the smart protective shield.
