Under the patronage and presence of His Excellency Dr. Hellow Al-Askari, Minister of Environment, and during his official visit toAL-Mustaqbal University, a joint scientific memorandum of cooperation was signed between the university and the ministry. This step aims to consolidate institutional partnership in the fields of environmental protection and sustainable development, in alignment with the directives of the University President, Prof. Dr. Hassan Shakir Majdi, and in recognition of the university’s leading role through its outstanding achievements and research in support of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The memorandum outlines several key areas of mutual cooperation, including: supporting environmental research and studies, providing scientific consultations and technical reports on environmental impact assessments, organizing joint conferences and workshops, implementing training programs for capacity building, raising public awareness on the importance of adopting sound environmental practices, conducting environmental surveys, and promoting relevant activities through both parties’ media and online platforms.
The signing ceremony began with a speech delivered by Prof. Dr. Muzafar Sadiq Al-Zuhairi, Director of Scientific and Academic Supervision at the university, who welcomed the Minister and his accompanying delegation. He emphasized that this memorandum marks a real starting point for fruitful cooperation in reducing pollution and emissions, and in lowering the carbon footprint, especially in light of the escalating climate challenges facing the world.
For his part, the Minister of Environment expressed his sincere appreciation to the university administration, represented by Prof. Dr. Hassan Shakir Majdi, and the academic staff, praising the ambitious environmental initiatives and successful practical experiences he observed during the visit. He stated:
“What we witnessed today at AL-Mustaqbal University is a source of pride. The university represents a true model of sustainability—not just theorizing, but translating ideas into tangible practices that positively impact the environment and society.”
The signing ceremony was attended by the Administrative Deputy Minister, several government officials from environmental departments in the Middle Euphrates region and Babylon Governorate, as well as Assistant Prof. Dr. Abbas Al-Bawi, the university’s Assistant for Scientific Affairs, alongside a group of deans, department heads, and faculty members.
At the conclusion of the event, Prof. Dr. Muzafar Sadiq Al-Zuhairi, on behalf of the University President, presented the University Shield to the Minister, along with an official certificate issued by the Times Higher Education institution. The certificate documents AL-Mustaqbal University’s global first-place ranking in SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy – in the 2025 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, marking a historic achievement among Iraqi and Arab universities.
