Under the patronage of the President of Al-Mustaqbal University Professor Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi, and as part of the programs aimed at raising awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals and preparing for the launch of the “Future Ambassadors for Sustainability” camp, the College of Administrative Sciences organized a specialized workshop entitled:
“The Role of Foreign Direct Investment in Advancing the Sustainable Development Goals: Opportunities and Challenges.”
The workshop was delivered by Engineer Raad Joun, Chairman of the Babil Investment Commission, who addressed the overall investment landscape in Iraq, with a particular focus on the available investment opportunities in Babil Province. He emphasized its strategic importance as the industrial capital of Iraq, highlighting its unique advantages such as advanced infrastructure, qualified human resources, and a geographic location that positions it as a hub for both domestic and foreign investments.
The workshop discussions centered on the major challenges hindering the attraction of foreign direct investment, in addition to exploring mechanisms to activate its role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals—particularly in areas such as economic diversification, job creation, and strengthening national productivity.
The event witnessed active participation from the audience, led by the University President, Professor Dr. Hassan Shaker Majdi, who provided a series of important remarks on the workshop’s themes, stressing the necessity of involving universities in this strategic sector.
The workshop concluded with a set of key recommendations, most notably:
Building a sustainable investment environment through effective partnerships between universities, investment authorities, and the private sector, while linking research projects to development needs.
Working to diversify the economic base in Babil Province by encouraging investments in industrial, agricultural, and clean energy sectors, thereby reducing reliance on oil as the primary source of revenue.
Developing a strategic vision for Babil as a sustainable industrial capital, based on innovation, environmental protection, and the empowerment of local talent to compete both nationally and regionally.
