The Department of Biomedical Engineering is pleased to announce the preparation and publication of informational and instructional panels for the Physio-Control/Medtronic LIFEPAK 500 defibrillator, as part of our initiatives to enhance engineering knowledge of critical emergency devices.
The defibrillator is a critical life-saving device, and the new panels are designed to document its technical aspects and maintenance procedures.
About the LIFEPAK 500 defibrillator:
• Device name: LIFEPAK 500 defibrillator.
• Manufacturer: Physio-Control/Medtronic, USA.
• Primary Function: This device is a lifesaver, delivering controlled electrical shocks to the heart (defibrillation) to treat serious arrhythmias, such as ventricular fibrillation and pulseless ventricular tachycardia.
What do the new information panels include?
The newly prepared panels focus on the engineering procedures necessary to ensure the device is ready to operate in any emergency. These include:
1. Components and Accessories: Identify vital parts, such as defibrillator pads, a backup battery, an external charger, and printer paper.
2. Preventive Maintenance Program: Highlight the periodic maintenance schedule (daily/weekly/monthly/annually), starting with daily electrode condition checks and self-tests, then weekly battery condition and expiration checks, monthly functional testing and battery capacity measurement, and annual service at an authorized service center.
We invite all students and staff to view these panels to deepen their understanding of the operation and maintenance of this sensitive device, which reflects our commitment to achieving sustainability goals in healthcare.
