Vitamin C, a potent antioxidant, offers several benefits in cardiopulmonary surgery by mitigating the significant oxidative stress and systemic inflammation that are inherent to these procedures. During surgeries involving cardiopulmonary bypass, the body's natural defense against reactive oxygen species can be overwhelmed, leading to cellular and organ damage. Vitamin C supplementation helps to counteract this by scavenging free radicals and reducing inflammatory markers, which in turn can lead to improved clinical outcomes. Studies have shown that a high-dose administration of vitamin C can reduce the incidence of post-operative atrial fibrillation, a common and serious complication. Furthermore, its anti-inflammatory properties may contribute to a shorter duration of mechanical ventilation and a reduced length of stay in both the intensive care unit and the hospital. By protecting key organ systems, including the cardiovascular, respiratory, and renal systems, vitamin C helps to preserve organ function and reduce the risk of post-operative complications, ultimately leading to a faster and more complete recovery for patients. The benefits also extend to reducing post-operative drainage volume and promoting wound closure.
