As part of the series of scientific activities organized by the Department of Medical Laboratory Techniques – College of Health and Medical Technologies, and with the aim of enhancing students’ scientific awareness in preparation for the upcoming Sustainability Camp scheduled to be held at the beginning of October 2025, the department held an online workshop via Google Meet on Saturday, September 13, 2025, entitled:
🔹 “Chronic Diseases and Early Detection in Laboratories”
The workshop was presented by:
• Dr. Saja Lateef Salman
• Asst. Lecturer Sajad Razaq Jabbar
• Ms. Zainab Mahmood Hatem
• Student Rowan Ammar
Workshop Highlights:
The workshop addressed the vital role of laboratory diagnosis in the early detection of chronic diseases, which are considered a cornerstone of modern medicine due to their significant contribution in identifying the type and severity of diseases and formulating accurate treatment plans.
The discussion covered key laboratory tests used in the diagnosis and follow-up of chronic conditions, such as:
• Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) test
• Lipid and cholesterol measurements
• Liver and kidney function tests
• Hormonal assays
The speakers also discussed the latest laboratory technologies, including molecular diagnostics and artificial intelligence applications, and their role in enhancing the accuracy and speed of test results, thereby contributing to improved healthcare quality.
Moreover, the workshop emphasized that developing laboratory infrastructure and training medical staff are essential steps toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—particularly Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being—as they play a crucial role in preventing chronic diseases, reducing mortality rates, and improving quality of life.
The workshop witnessed active participation from students and attendees, who raised valuable scientific questions that enriched the discussion and highlighted the importance of diagnostic testing in both preventive and therapeutic medicine.
This workshop comes as part of the department’s ongoing initiatives to enhance students’ scientific and practical awareness, and to broaden their knowledge in clinical laboratory sciences, in support of quality education and sustainable development goals.
