Introduction

Nanotechnology involves manipulating materials at the molecular and atomic levels within a range of 1–100 nanometers, which gives them unique physical, chemical, and biological properties. These properties can be harnessed across various fields to serve the environment and promote sustainable development.
Nanotechnology and Sustainable Development
Sustainable development is based on three main dimensions: economy, society, and environment. Nanotechnology contributes to balancing these dimensions through:
1. Preserving natural resources by reducing waste and improving efficiency.
2. Providing eco-friendly solutions to minimize pollution and treat waste.
3. Enhancing quality of life through applications in health, energy, and agriculture.
1. Applications of Nanotechnology in Environmental Protection
1. Water Treatment:
The use of silver nanoparticles and iron oxides helps remove bacterial and viral contaminants. Nanofiltration membranes have also been developed to desalinate seawater efficiently and produce clean drinking water.
2. Air Pollution Reduction:
Nanomaterial-based air filters can absorb toxic gases and fine particles. Moreover, nano oxides are used to catalyze chemical reactions that decompose harmful gases such as nitrogen and sulfur oxides.
3. Industrial Waste Treatment:
Nanomaterials are applied to catalyze the biodegradation of chemical pollutants, as well as to develop technologies that convert hazardous waste into environmentally safe materials.
