The Department of Medical Laboratory Techniques at Al-Mustaqbal University Organizes the Third Hackathon on Genomics and Genetic Data Analysis
On Sunday, September 28, 2025, the Department of Medical Laboratory Techniques at the College of Health and Medical Technologies, Al-Mustaqbal University, organized its third Hackathon under the title: “Genomics and Genetic Data Analysis Hackathon”, with the participation of students from all academic stages.
The competition aimed to strengthen students’ skills in genetic analysis and data interpretation, linking them to disease prediction, thereby preparing qualified scientific cadres capable of contributing to the advancement of the healthcare sector and the scientific community.
The hackathon focused on several practical challenges that required students to integrate theoretical knowledge with analytical thinking, including:
• Analyzing genetic mutations and interpreting their impact on health.
• Linking genetic variants to chronic diseases to facilitate prevention and early intervention.
• Designing and developing innovative educational tools that simplify genetics concepts for students and new researchers.
The event was held in the laboratories of the Department of Medical Laboratory Techniques, with the presence of a distinguished jury of specialized professors:
1. Prof. Dr. Ayman Mohammed Jarallah – College of Science, University of Babylon
2. Prof. Dr. Marwa Fadel Al-Saffar – Al-Mustaqbal University, College of Health and Medical Technologies
3. Prof. Dr. Essam Mahmoud Ali – Al-Mustaqbal University, College of Health and Medical Technologies
4. Dr. Shaimaa Adel Khudair – Al-Mustaqbal University, College of Health and Medical Technologies
📌 Awards were distributed to participants as follows:
• First Prize: Honorary Shield
• Second Prize: Certificate of Appreciation
• Third Prize: Certificate of Participation
The competition witnessed great interaction from students, who demonstrated their abilities in analysis, critical thinking, and the application of genetic data to create innovative solutions. This activity also contributed to strengthening the spirit of scientific competition and collaboration among students, while directly linking theoretical knowledge with practical application.
This event comes as part of the department’s efforts to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, by promoting research innovation and developing modern scientific tools and techniques. It also aligns with other sustainability goals, such as Goal 4: Quality Education, by training students in critical thinking and the use of modern technology in practical learning.
The Department of Medical Laboratory Techniques affirms that such scientific activities contribute to building a generation of competent graduates capable of facing future challenges, while reinforcing the university’s position as a center of scientific excellence and innovation in the field of health and medical sciences.
