Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer among women worldwide, accounting for about 25% of all cancer cases in women. The month of October is recognized globally as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, during which awareness campaigns and early detection programs are conducted to reduce the incidence and mortality rates associated with the disease.

World Breast Cancer Awareness Day, observed annually on October 15, aims to highlight the importance of early detection. Studies show that early diagnosis increases the chance of recovery by more than 90%. The main methods of early detection include breast self-examination, clinical examination, and mammography.

Medically, breast cancer occurs due to abnormal and uncontrolled division of breast tissue cells, leading to the formation of a lump or tumor that may be benign or malignant. The main risk factors include:
• Advancing age
• Genetic mutations (such as BRCA1 and BRCA2)
• Obesity and physical inactivity
• Long-term hormone therapy
• Smoking and unhealthy dietary habits

Prevention involves adopting a healthy lifestyle through regular physical activity, a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, avoiding smoking, and undergoing periodic medical checkups — especially for women over forty or those with a family history of the disease.

The pink ribbon is the international symbol of breast cancer awareness, used worldwide throughout October to express support for patients and encourage public participation in awareness campaigns and research funding.

In conclusion, early awareness and health education are the foundation for reducing breast cancer incidence and mortality. Moreover, psychological and social support for affected women is an essential part of their journey toward healing and recovery.
