Faculty member lecturer in the Department of Archaeology (. Zaid Awad Atiya) organized a scientific workshop titled "The Importance of Archaeological Surveying – Tel Ahmar Al-Ainayn as a Model," which was delivered in the presence of a distinguished group of professors, students, and heritage enthusiasts.
The workshop highlighted the vital role of archaeological surveying in documenting historical sites and protecting them from decay, in addition to serving as an essential step in understanding the history and civilizational development of societies. The presenter discussed modern scientific methods employed in this field and addressed the challenges faced by excavation and surveying teams in Iraq.
Furthermore, the presenter linked the significance of these efforts to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 11, which aims to "make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable," by emphasizing that preserving cultural heritage contributes to strengthening national identity and constitutes an integral part of sustainable urban planning. He also noted the connection between archaeological surveying and Sustainable Development Goal 15, which focuses on protecting ecosystems through the scientific documentation of cultural and natural resources.
At the conclusion of the workshop, an extensive discussion was held among the attendees on the importance of integrating heritage concepts into educational and cultural policies, as well as on the role of youth and researchers in safeguarding historical legacy and achieving sustainable development goals.
