The Sustainability Ambassadors in the Department of Smart Medical Systems at the Faculty of Sciences organized an awareness lecture titled "The Dangers of Extremism and the Importance of Tolerance in Society," presented by Assistant Lecturer Qusay Munir Diab, with the participation of Ms. Huda Khudair Hani, a member of the Activities Committee, and attended by a group of students.
The lecture focused on the importance of promoting a culture of tolerance as a fundamental pillar for building stable and safe societies. The speakers emphasized the need to instill principles of mutual respect and peaceful coexistence among various segments of society, as this plays a vital role in strengthening social cohesion and supporting stability.
The lecture also highlighted the significant dangers of extremism, such as the disruption of social fabric, the incitement of conflicts, and its connection to violence and tension that threaten national security. It also discussed the negative economic impacts of extremism, such as reduced investment, lower development, and fewer job opportunities.
The speakers also discussed the role of misleading information in the spread of extremist ideologies, stressing the need to enhance critical thinking among individuals and analyze information accurately. The lecture also emphasized the importance of constructive dialogue as a tool for understanding and communication among community members, free from intolerance.
Moreover, the lecture addressed the crucial role of educational institutions in promoting a culture of tolerance and awareness of positive values to enable the new generation to handle differences in a civilized manner.
Regarding the Sustainable Development Goals, the lecture contributes to achieving Goal 4 by raising awareness and enhancing critical thinking. It also contributes to Goal 16 by promoting values of peace and justice, and to Goal 10 by reducing social inequalities and fostering equality in society.
