Cholera is a bacterial disease that is typically transmitted through contaminated water. Cholera causes dehydration and severe diarrhea. Even in previously healthy people, cholera can be fatal within hours if not treated.
In industrialized countries, modern sewage and water treatment have virtually eliminated cholera. However, cholera persists in Africa, Southeast Asia, and Haiti. When poverty, war, or natural disasters force people to live in overcrowded conditions with inadequate sanitation, the risk of a cholera epidemic rises. It is simple to treat cholera. With a quick and low-cost rehydration method, death from severe dehydration can be avoided.
The majorities of people who are exposed to the cholera bacteria (Vibrio cholera) don't get sick and are unaware that they have been infected. However, tainted water can still spread the disease to other people.
Most cholera cases that result in symptoms cause mild to moderate diarrhea, which is frequently difficult to distinguish from diarrhea brought on by other conditions. Others experience more severe cholera symptoms, typically within a few days after infection. Cholera risk is minimal in developed countries. If you abide by food safety regulations, you won't likely contract the infection even in locations where it exists. Cholera outbreaks continue to happen all over the world. Consult your doctor if you experience severe diarrhea after traveling to a cholera-endemic area. If you have diarrhea, especially severe diarrhea, and believe you may have been exposed to cholera, seek medical attention immediately. Severe dehydration is a medical emergency that must be treated right away.
