Experimental Operation of a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine Project for Mechanical Engineering Students As part of the activities of the Renewable Energy Research Center at Al-Mustaqbal University, an experimental operation of a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) project was conducted by students of the Department of Mechanical Power Engineering – Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Branch. The activity was carried out under the supervision of the Director of the Renewable Energy Research Center, Dr. Salwan Obaid Waheed, in the presence of the center’s technical staff. The project aims to convert wind energy into electrical energy through a practical prototype of a vertical axis wind turbine. The system was developed to provide students with hands-on experience in renewable energy technologies and to demonstrate the practical application of engineering concepts related to clean energy generation. During the experimental operation, the students presented the working principle of the system and the main components of the wind turbine, explaining how the kinetic energy of wind is transformed into electrical power. They also demonstrated the monitoring and measurement system used to record voltage and current generated by the turbine. A technical and scientific discussion of the project was conducted by Dr. Salwan Obaid Waheed along with the research center staff, where several engineering recommendations and technical observations were provided to improve the design and enhance the electrical generation efficiency of the prototype. This activity reflects the Renewable Energy Research Center’s commitment to supporting student projects and promoting sustainable energy awareness, while encouraging innovation and scientific research in the field of renewable energy.
